Finally we are able to show you photos of the bunk beds, with mattresses, bedding, pillows, mosquito nets and happy children. For some this is the first bed of their own they have ever had or the first spring mattress. Some had been living in an IDP camp for a year or more. These children wish to say a very big thank you for your help in this project!

Just a little explanation of why it took so long. The main reason is that nothing goes quickly in the rural areas of a developing country like Nigeria. There is no Walmart and no Amazon delivery.  In fact after some off-the-shelf sources raised their price to an exorbitant level over the initial amount agreed upon, the decision was to constructed the bunk beds on site and stay within budget. Of course this took time. Even raw materials can be hard to come by and progress is at the mercy of the craftsman. There is some benefit to making the job take longer, as you may imaging. But eventually the beds were complete, the mattresses delivered, bedding made and mosquito netting ready so that the bunks can be slept in.  Then there were some delays getting photos, but as you can see, this project is complete.

Naomi described seeing "the excitement in the kids . . . they were over the moon. It made my heart so glad and I can only imagine how pleased the Lord must be seeing the kids so happy." As you can see the bunk beds are triple deckers to make the most of the minimal space available.

UPDATE - January 24, 2025

Thanks to generous supporters more than enough funds were raised to purchase the 10 bunk beds, mattresses and pillows.  Wonderful! The extra raised will go towards sheets, blankets and mosquito netting which are also needed, as malaria is endemic in the area. But this is also a good time to remember that we are partners with B4G.  They have also raised several hundred dollars towards these needs, a local church provided mosquito netting for 15 children, and roughly 650 lbs of grain has been donated. In Nigeria there is a proverb which in several language goes something like this: "The person who needs help lifting a load must have his hands on the load before he asks for help." We have found that our partners, B4G and AMEN, truly hold to this proverb and are working hard to do what they can.  It is our privilege to join them in their work of rescue and restoration.

If you missed the chance to give, but still wanted to help, we will leave the window open a little longer. Any additional funds that come in for Kauna Home Furnishings will still go toward getting these children set up, but it will be blankets, uniforms, toiletries and shoes.

The following video clip shows that the children are being well fed, but the conditions are rather crowded. We expect a larger project to expand their space to be coming up in the future. As photos of the beds, etc. become available, we will share them here and let you know.

ORIGINAL POST - January 16, 2025

In the last several days B4G has brought 2 dozen new orphans into Kauna Home from the surrounding IDP Camps. A few are shown in the photo as they are preparing to leave the IDP Camp. Most of these children have existed in the camp for over a year, since their villages were attacked and destroyed in the Christmas attacks of 2023. Today we received this request from Naomi, founder of B4G:

"The newly admitted orphans came with virtually nothing and they have many needs. First before other needs we are short of beds. One double bunk bed to accommodate 2 children is N110,000. One six-spring mattress with a pillow is N34,600 x 2 children. That makes a total N179,200 to accommodate two children. This is roughly approximately $110 for bed and mattresses for 2 children. And that's exclusive of beddings including blankets and mosquito nets. We need about 10 double bunks. . . We are wondering if STM can possibly help now?"

The STM Board has approved that we will provide a grant to help with this need and we are hoping that supporters and friends will contribute. Remember that if you send us $10, we assure you that all $10 will get to Nigeria and into the hands of B4G staff, and that they will use your donation to purchase beds for these children. Within a month or so, you will see photos of those beds with their new occupants.

Any method you have used to donate in the past is still fine.
